Day 350: Couldn't have said it better myself

So appropriate that I spotted this just after I'd left the library with books in hand! I'm checking out this artist's shop and may have to purchase a few things...

Day 302: A present

Okay, not really. But books are always presents for me. This one was so old and fragile that it was wrapped in paper for protection. I had to request it from the archives and when I picked it up, I was very surprised to receive this package. It's good so far!

Day 202: Library visit

I went to the library today to look for how-to books on crochet. Instead I took out four fiction books. This is the stash of library books I've got at home now. Hmm, I really think I better return some of these soon...

Day 175: Books again

Sorry to be repetitive, but I started my next book tonight by Dorothy Whipple*, and it was one that had to be brought up from the archives (first printed in 1939). I opened the back cover to see when I had to return it, and I saw this. Now it's probably not right to say the last time the book was checked out was in 1982, as they probably computerized it all before too recently. But I still found it neat to think that someone had checked this book out in 1963 and here I am, 45 years later, checking out the very same book.

*Special thanks to Helen for bringing this amazing author to my attention! x

Day 174: The story of the the book and the mitten

So this evening I went to the library to pick up some books I had recalled and one I'd requested through inter-library loan (it came in from the University of Pennsylvania). I went to the library and got two and then went outside to wait for S. I took a few photos before he arrived. Then, we walked to the other library to get the book from Penn. We went back outside to wait for the bus, and at that point I realized I'd lost one of my mittens. So we walked back to the first library, where I found the mitten at the security desk. And when we were there, the security guard said we'd left the book from the second library at the other security desk. So we walked back to go find it. By the time all of this backtracking was over, we'd missed the regular bus, so we had to wait for ages to get the night bus. And this bus took a half an hour to get even close to the apartment, and then the driver made us get off and take yet another bus, which drove all the way around the neighborhood before we could get off. Frustrating. (But I did read the entire book and it was so worth it!)

Day 144: Reading on a Saturday

Although I did laundry, went grocery shopping and attended a dinner party on Saturday, I spent a fair amount of the day reading this. Thanks to H for the recommendation!

Day 105: Another day, another library

I ran a number of errands today, but getting my New Haven Free Public Library card was definitely not a chore - it was a pleasure! I had to restrain myself from checking too many things out, because I leave on Friday for Pennsylvania and then will be going to Chicago next Tuesday. Thus I took out only two books and two films. I've read one book and watched one movie thus far, so I should be on track to finish these by next Monday!

Day 102: The Little Nun

In my first weekend in New Haven, I have thus far been to my first party, went to Starbucks for my first egg nog latte, ate Thai food for lunch (not for the first time), and visited the New Haven Public Library. It is a brilliant place with my favourite thing (books) and I stumbled across this great collection on a display focusing on comics. This strip featuring the heroine 'The Little Nun' was in a book called We All Die Alone: A collection of cartoons and jokes by Mark Newgarden. In my research about this great strip, I found out that Mark Newgarden created the Garbage Pail Kids! How cool is he!! I so want this book now.

Day 96: Heaven...I'm in heaven...

Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University. What better thing to do on my birthday than check books out of my new library for the first time? Bliss!

Day 85: Celebrity Sighting #2

After shifting from the hotel to the flat I'm staying in for the next week, I rested for a while as I've caught a slight cold. I finally motivated myself enough to get out to the American Library in Paris to hear one of my favourite authors read. David Sedaris is an amazing writer whom I have been listening to on Chicago radio and reading for many years, and I was thrilled to have the chance to hear him read from his latest book and his diaries. I didn't even mind that the place was so packed I had to stand for over an hour. Brilliant!
